Your New First Aid Kit
Many people have their first aid kit. Often it will contain some band-aids, may be an antiseptic cream and probably that's it. In any other walk of life, technology has taken over but in healthcare, the pace of change is slow.
As the guardians of your health, we want to ensure that when you are at home, you are set up correctly to look after your health. This starts with your first aid kit. Whilst you still need your band-aids and iodine to deal with wounds, you also should have other equipment to ensure you make the right decisions about your or your family's health. By measuring certain things, you can identify if you are really unwell or not, (most equipment will give you normal and abnormal ranges, but check with us if you are not sure). Also by bringing this information in for us to review, we can see how bad things really are. Having said that, if you are ever in doubt, please book in and see us.

Check Your Temperature
The thermometer is probably one of the most useful pieces of equipment at home. It can highlight if you have a severe infection and is especially useful with children. Many devices measure your temperature by placing the device in your ear. Newer devices can measure your temperature from a distance, so you don't even need to wake a sleeping child. Check Your Oxygen Levels
If you have any chest symptoms such as a cough, measuring your oxygen levels can give you heaps of information about whether this is a really bad problem or not. It is a small device that you place on the tip of your finger that shines a light through your finger and calculates how much oxygen your blood is carrying. Low levels indicate a potential problem with the heart or lungs. Click here for an example.
Check Your Blood Pressure
Your blood pressure can be affected by many health problems. By measuring it, you can get a good idea as to whether your illness is really becoming bad. The more accurate devices are the ones where the cuff goes around your upper arm as we have in the clinic. Click here for an example.
It's An Emergency!
Unfortunately, sometimes emergencies happen. Having access to the right information straight away can be the difference between life and death. By having an emergency app, such as the one produced by the Australian Red Cross, on your phone, you will know where to look, if you have to quickly work out what to do. Read more.
